We here at the Big Android BBQ are extremely excited to announce that Samsung, Cyanogenmod, and XDA Developers have all signed on as sponsors for the Big Android BBQ 2013! If you are into Android, then you are more than familiar with all three of these organizations, but let’s take moment and briefly describe the awesomeness of each.

We’ll start with Samsung. The Galaxy series has been a boon for the Android operating system. The S2, S3, and now the S4 are all flagship devices that pushed the envelope of handset features and design. 2013 marks the third year Samsung will be a part of the BABBQ. This year, however, they’ve decided to sign on earlier than in the past!

Next we have the Cyanogenmod team of developers: a group of developers devoted to providing you, the Android community, with a top-notch, AOSP Android ROM for a humongous list of handsets. They’ve been selflessly providing their coding expertise, open and free, since 2008 while helping to give back along the way.

Last, but not least, is XDA Developers, which is every Android enthusiast’s go-to website for all things development; root, ROM, and everything in between. XDA Developers, especially the Developers Forum, has been an incredible resource for Android developers and enthusiasts since the release of the G1.

With that being said, we have changed the way volunteering works this year. We are going to go above and beyond to make the volunteers get the special treatment they deserve for working hard.

Here are few things we are going to do to make this year special!

• You will experience the BBQ in a much different way.

• You will have unprecedented access that others will not.

• You will have the opportunity to meet directly with speakers and special guests.

• You will be volunteering for the entire event (not one day).

• You will receive special swag, such as a volunteer pin that is exclusive to volunteers ONLY!

• You will also receive a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the BBQ towel, 2 volunteer shirts, and a FREE ticket to the Big Android BBQ!

 What we need:

• 20 volunteers to run shifts (making sure events are going smoothly)
• 4 volunteers for the food prep team who will help with the AMAZING Ray Walters (can be requested, but Ray will decide at the BBQ)
• 4 cooking assistants to help with preparation of onions, plating of food, etc.
• 2 volunteer leaders (preferably volunteer from previous years or persons with other event experience)

 Now for the details:

Because you will be helping to keep the event running smoothly, you will not get the same freedoms or times to see the workshops as attendees. We continue to work hard to make volunteering for the Big Android BBQ a fun, exciting, and rewarding experience. We must, however, stress this year that if you are selected as a volunteer, YOU’RE STICKING TO IT! See you in October!

The Big Android BBQ is an annual conference during which Android developers and enthusiasts share and celebrate their passion for the Android mobile operating system. Since its establishment in 2010 the attendance at the Big Android BBQ has grown significantly each consecutive year, and we are projecting another large increase this year.

Our theme for 2013, “The Development Core”, focuses on Android’s core strength: its talented and diverse DEVELOPERS. The event kicks off on Thursday evening and continues through Saturday night with a variety of sessions covering a multitude of different topics. We are not imposing a strict time limit or presentation format. Let us know what you have in mind, whether it be a presentation or a workshop, and we will take it under consideration. Sessions with a healthy dose of creativity and innovation will be given priority, so put on your thinking cap and submit those killer session ideas!

• Application Development: 101 – Android for beginners, a track of courses designed to turn an enthusiast into a new developer

• Best Practices for Experienced Developers – A track of courses with sessions for experienced developers

• Hack ‘n’ Mod – Sessions involving hardware and software hacking and modification

• Android: Beyond the Phone – Sessions including watches, game systems, automotive, smart home, and other uses of android beyond the smartphone and tablet.

Levels

To make sure that we and the BABBQ13 attendees understand the level of detail in your session, we would like to be able to split the sessions into three levels:

• Overview – No previous knowledge of the topic.

• Intermediate – Attendees have a broad knowledge of the topic.

• Advanced – The attendees have a deep knowledge of the topic.

• Enthusiast – The attendees are there just for the love of Android.
